Medicare Australia fundraising policy

Important note:

Medicare Australia has finalised our national fundraising support for 2008-09. We are delighted to be partnering with the Leukaemia Foundation of AustraliaExternal link and The Starlight Foundation.External link

No new application will be considered until November 2009.

Medicare Australia receives many requests from government and non-government organisations requesting support for various fundraising activities, at a national, state and community level.

In an effort to provide community support across a range of charities and health related issues we limit our support to a maximum of two years for any one charity.

National level fundraising

Two health-related charities are supported at a national level each year (for a maximum of two years), with promotional material for each charity being displayed in a Medicare office for a maximum of four weeks each year.
To help support this process we have a formal application process. Each charity seeking support at a national level will need to complete and submit an Application for national or state level support form.

State level fundraising

Two health-related charities will be supported at a state level each year, with promotional material for each charity being displayed in a Medicare office for a maximum of four weeks. Applications for state support should be sent to the attention of the State Manager, GPO Box 9822 in your capital city.

Appropriate organisations for fundraising

Medicare Australia can offer support to appropriate charities, such as:

  • health related
  • non-political
  • not raising money for religious purposes, however the charity may be a religious organisation e.g. St Vincent de Paul
  • not involved in any controversial activities or likely to expose Medicare Australia to criticism
  • undertaking activities that fit with the purpose and goals of Medicare Australia.

All charities supported by Medicare Australia must be an incorporated association under the relevant State or Territory Association Incorporation Act.

Pre-purchase of goods

Some charities may request the pre purchase of goods for sale. The purchase of any goods and services by Medicare Australia must be in accordance with our legislative requirements under the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997, Commonwealth Procurement Guidelines, and the Medicare Australia Procurement Guidelines. Medicare Australia’s preferred method relating to fundraising activities is to collect donations and or sell items on behalf of the charity and then return unsold stock and the proceeds on completion of the event or agreed period.
