About the Graduate Program

Program objectives

graduatesMedicare Australia considers the graduate program as one method of injecting educated and talented people into the organisation to develop a pool of people from which to select our future leaders.

The program provides graduates with a fast and comprehensive career development program and assists in the transition from university to work. It also provides graduates with a range of basic skills and knowledge to enable them to operate successfully in a range of positions within the organisation.

The main features of our program are:

  • competitive commencing salary $48 101pa plus superannuation (APS 3)
  • after successful completion of the nine month program, salary progression to an APS 4
  • assistance with interstate relocation costs for successful candidates
  • customised learning and development program
  • comprehensive induction program
  • work rotations
  • dedicated Senior Executive mentor
  • SNoG Membership (Social Network of Graduates). Only available to ACT graduates.

Eligibility

apple throwTo be eligible to apply for Medicare Australia’s graduate program you must:

  • be an Australian citizen (applicants selected for interview must provide evidence of Australian citizenship at the interview. Eg. Birth certificate, Australian passport, citizenship certificate.)
  • have completed a minimum three year Bachelor's degree with a credit average or higher
  • have completed the degree within 4 years of the commencement of the program (between July 2004 and July 2008)
  • be ready, willing and able to commence work on Thursday 24 July 2008

Successful applicants must also undergo a mandatory police records check and pre-employment medical with Health Services Australia. These will be arranged on your behalf.

What Medicare Australia is looking for in a graduate

graduates2We are looking for graduates with personal and professional ethics aligned with Medicare Australia’s service charter. We welcome applications from dynamic, innovative and customer focused people who have a genuine passion for contributing to improving the delivery of health programs to the Australian community.

We are seeking graduates with bachelor’s degrees from all academic backgrounds including finance, commerce, business, communications, marketing, IT and health related fields to fill a variety of roles across all areas of the organisation.

Program structure

hand appleGraduates must be in a position to commence duty on Thursday, 24 July 2008.

Graduates will be rotated through at least two roles or distinct projects throughout the nine month program.

The Mainstream Graduate Program provides graduates with exposure to our corporate and program divisions across the organisation. This gives Graduates the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in a variety of areas, gaining a sound understanding of how Medicare Australia operates and serves the Australian community.

The IT Graduate Program is administered by the Quality Assurance section within the IT Online Applications Development Branch. Key objectives of this programme provide Graduates with specialist training across system development lifecycle frameworks including testing technique processes and automation toolsets in particular HP Quality Centre 9.2, training in Cobol, Delta, Java and Websphere language.

At the beginning of each placement/rotation, graduates in consultation with their supervisor, will develop a Performance Support Agreement and work plan. This agreement details objectives and tasks as well as skills needed to develop.

At the end of each rotation your supervisor will provide a report on your performance. This report will give an opportunity for you to discuss your performance targets and developmental needs.

Conditions of employment

juggleMedicare Australia is an APS agency and its employment provisions are governed by the Public Service Act 1999.

The terms and conditions of employment are set out in the Medicare Australia Certified Agreement 2005-2008.

There are a variety of provisions to help staff balance their work and personal life that you will be able to access, including:

  • four weeks annual leave (accrued over 12 months)

  • variety of other leave provisions
  • study assistance.

Graduates will start at the APS 3 classification, subject to satisfying all pre-employment checks. Medicare Australia’s APS 3 salary is currently $48 101 per annum.

At the successful completion of the graduate program you will be advanced to an APS 4.

Graduates interested in advancing to a higher level, above an APS 4 (at the completion of the program) will be able to apply for these positions and compete with other candidates. Medicare Australia's graduate program is designed to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to make them a competitive candidate for promotion.

As a condition of your appointment you will also be required to satisfactorily complete a six month probationary period before your appointment can be confirmed. You may also be required to contribute to a ComSuper superannuation scheme.

Graduates will be restricted from applying for promotions or temporary performance opportunities during the initial nine months of their employment.
